Symbian Games Highlight/Introduction on N-Gage 10/26/2003, by Philip

Space Impact Evolution

Much talk has been made of the MMC (the branded N-Gage games) titles on the N-Gage, and while these games deserve the attention they are getting, many people have overlooked the other gaming alternatives that the N-Gage provides.

Amongst these alternatives are the Symbian games. In case you don't know the N-Gage operates on the same Symbian operating system as other Nokia Series 60 phones (7650 and 3650), and it can run virtually all of the Symbian games and applications made for these phones as well. This instantly gives the N-Gage many game titles to choose from. So, while you are waiting for a particular MMC titles to come out, or if you just can't have enough games to play on your N-Gage, it would be well worth your time to take a look into the Symbian games that are available for the N-Gage. It can be a daunting task to round up this information though, so that is where I come in.

Symbian_Games_4.jpg                          Symbian_Games_6.jpg

I shall start with a short explanation of the specifics of Symbian games. Symbian games and applications can be identified by their .sis file extension. Symbian games are typically distributed online, and while some are free, many are sold from 5-15$. This makes them particularly cheap alternatives to the MMC titles however; they are not without their downsides. They are usually rather small (in order to fit on memory of the other phones), and they sometimes lack the depth and quality of MMC titles. Control issues and sound issues on some games can make playing these games unpleasant.

So, Symbian games have both good and bad attributes. The good attributes can be summed up by these points:

#1: Symbian games can be fully "fleshed out". They can have nice sound effects, 3D graphics and in depth game play. Some Symbian games even support Bluetooth multiplayer.

#2: They can be downloaded "on demand" from websites, and multiple games can be installed on a single MMC card. The fact that you can have multiple games installed on a single card can be a nice way to get by the sometimes troublesome task of changing out MMC cards.

#3: Along with the rather cheap prices, Symbian games can usually be downloaded as demos. This gives you a nice "try before you buy" option that you don't have with some other games.

The best way to separate the good Symbian games from the bad ones is to test them out. But, of course that is not something all of you will be able to do. I shall try to test them out and share the best I find with you. I will start with a very nice game many of you might have discovered, but some of you might be unaware of, Space Impact Evolution.

Symbian_Games_7.jpgThis is a nice game to start out with because it should have been on your N-Gage CD and you can acquaint yourself with the process of installing a Symbian game. Before I continue I must say that unless you have a MMC card that you can write to (don't try using retail MMC game card), you won't be able to follow my steps and install a Symbian game. However, if your N-Gage games with the "Nokia Game", you can use that card without any worries because the game is up for download on NokiaGame.Com. Likewise if you purchased your own blank MMC card you will be able to follow my steps as well.

The first step would be to browse the N-Gage CD and go into the "Software" folder. You should see a file named:"Nokia N-Gage SpaceImpact.sis". Now, (I must add here that you can view the guide to installing .sis files by browsing to Guides on your N-Gage CD and then going into the SIS_Guide folder) you should make sure that your MMC card is in your N-Gage and that your N-Gage is turned on. Also, in order to get the USB connection to work on anything other than Windows 2000, you should need to install the Nokia Audio Manager which comes on your CD as well.

Once you have done these, you should be able to plug your USB cable from the N-Gage to the computer, and it will then show up as an additional drive. Now, all you have to do is drag and drop the "Nokia N-Gage SpaceImpact.sis", file into the root directory of your MMC card, using windows explorer.

After this is done, you only have to install it. Using your N-Gage, you will then want to go to the Menu, select Tools, and then Manager. The .sis file that you moved over to your card should be visible. Then you should install it by choosing the options and then install. Click yes to everything it asks, and choose to install the game on the MMC card when the option appears. Then you should have Space Impact Evolution installed on your N-Gage. You might want to restart your N-Gage after this because on occasion the menu icons can fail to display after you added data to your N-Gage or installed something new.

Onto the game! You can access the game in your menu. It should appear the same places that MMC game icons appear. Just select it and start playing! Space Evolution is an excellent space shooter game that happens to be perfectly suited for the N-Gage. It features several levels with unique enemies and end bosses. The graphics are well done, the sound effects fit fairly well and the power-ups are nice. This game should give you a fair bit of enjoyment, as well as what is probably your first glimpse at a Symbian game on your N-Gage. Ordinarily I would give a much more in depth overview of the game, including screen shots. But since I took so long explaining and considering the fact that you should have the game installed by now anyway, I will leave the exploration to you.

Looks like a sweet game - especially for zero-dollars-down.

Time to get busy with the SIS files... If you guys could provide a link to other places to get the files I sure would appreciate it.

I thought the 3rd article would be on squeezing movies into mmc cards to play on the n-gage. Has this article been forgotten? Or is still being written?

I just want to clarify one thing. I submitted a new feature to NGageGaming.Com (this one). I did this on my own, not at their prompting. Hence, it shouldn´t have ANY bearing on other features they might be working on. I will be doing more Symbian game features, but they won´t have any direct bearing on other things people on the site are working on. Basically that just means more features for you guys, not that others are being pushed aside.

Yo!! im a new proud owner of an N-Gage and believe it is the best thing ever due to its graphic abilities and its easy to use sybian system. Anyways the main reason i have contacted your site was for a simple question. Can i play doom on the N-gage? i used to own a 7650 and thought that it was the greatest thing on earth but then when i heard that the N-gage used the same software i couldnt help but just buy it.

If you have the Doom game for the 7650 it WILL play on the N-Gage! However, you will need a patch for it, because it wasn´t originally made to work on MMC cards... There is a 3650 patch out there, but it is just "floating" around. I would do a search for 3650 Doom patch or the like, and something should come up.
